One for the whole family.
This week, I decided to focus on a good, family targeted movie that I love to watch. "Door to Door" is a docudrama about Bill Porter's struggle to live a normal life. Born with Cerebral Palsy, Bill struggled throughout life. Living with his mother, Bill set out to find work, to help support his loving mother. He soon found that, once again, Cerebral Palsy had crippled his life. He was considered unemployable, but due to his immense courage and determination, he was able to obtain a job at Watkins, as a door to door salesman. With his best friend Shelly Brady, Bill overcame his physical disabilities to win the "Highest Personal Sales" award in 1979, and the "Top Salesman Award" for 1996.
The real Bill Porter
If you are a fan of William H. Macy, then you will love this movie. I thought that his performance was impeccable. Bill Porter, himself, also said, "William Macy did a stellar job portraying me, and I hope he wins an Emmy!" I think he was nominated for a Golden Globe and an Oscar, but didn't win. I'm not sure.
If you do notice Macy's excellent performance, you must have been really watching the movie, since the remaining cast members produced stellar performances. The story is well told, and the fact that it is based on actual events, only makes your level of enjoyment go up. Door to Door is one of those "feel good" movies. One of those actual feel good movies, none of that summer, comedy, blockbuster crap. Bill Porter has been dubbed "Unstoppable," and after watching this movie, you'll see why.
The film blends comedy and drama together, so well, that you'll find yourself laughing, and crying (crying inside, I guess) within the same minute. I think this is one of William H. Macy's best performances, which propelled it into my Top 10 movies of Movie Camp 2003.
